Anti-Transit, Anti-Rider Parking Measure Submitted, Likely to Qualify
A measure to require big increases in parking in new developments has been submitted for the ballot and is likely to qualify. If this measure passes, it will be terrible for transit riders, causing massive new traffic congestion. Stay tuned for how you can help defeat it!
I find it amazing how these things can get on the ballot and will most likely pass, in San Francisco, which keeps telling everyone how “environmental” we are….
This measure has some particularly brazen greenwashing in the form of requirements for hybrid and car sharing spaces. Not remotely enough for it to have any merit, of course, just enough to appeal to the voters who want *other* people to drive a Prius.
We need a publicity stunt before the election to persuade people that this is a very bad idea. I recommend parking an big ugly SUV in civic center plaza and coordinate a flash mop of people to destroy it using bats, spray paint, and crowbars provided. Invite the press and put a large banner over the SUV that reads “Vote no measure X- keep SF transit friendly” That would give you much needed press assuming you could get a large enough crowd to show up.
Now where to get an SUV to be vandalized… i suppose we could rent one and get lots of insurance for it!

Ziggy, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea. Anti car activists would love it but others would be turned off. The point in opposing this measure is to convince everyone INCLUDING CAR OWNERS that increasing parking citywide would be bad for traffic and transit alike.
