Mayor – Gavin Newsom

Thanks to everyone who participated, and thanks to Mayor Newsom for attending the meeting and staying longer than scheduled to answer member questions.
If you can help out the Yes on A/No on H campaign in any way—either by volunteering to phone bank or by contributing to the campaign—please click here and sign up to do so. Passing Prop A and defeating Prop H is critical to Muni’s future. The campaign needs your help right now. Please consider donating time, money, or both to this vital cause.
I just read my voter pamphlet. The word hypocrite comes to mind. Some of those who wrote paid arguments against Prop H own cars. Some of them have two cars and a garage. They got theirs!
A few years ago a newspaper article said that Supervisor Peskin complained that due to the increase in automobiles he had problems finding a place to park when returning home from work. I hope the Supervisor now has a garage and no longer contributes to traffic congestion and delays MUNI by driving around looking for a place to park. How about Elsbrand, does he drive a car or ride MUNI? Where does he park his car?
Do we know what our transportation system’s CO2 emissions were in 1990? Do we know what they are today? As far as we know, MUNI may have already met Kyoto goals and saved the planet. The globe has not gotten any warmer in last 8 years and has gotten colder in the past few years. The southern hemisphere had record low temperatures this year. California is getting colder. The Shasta glacier is growing. Last winter’s freeze destroyed San Joaquin Valley crops.
Supervisor McGoldrick may be correct that Prop A is a hodgepodge collection of ideas that may not be in our best interests. Too bad because it also has some good ideas.
You don’t have to be “car free” to think that the proposed big increases in parking will be bad for the economy and for the transit system, let alone the air. In fact, most San Franciscans BOTH use cars and mass transit – and this majority would be the most hurt by the new traffic congestion downtown that Prop H would cause.
Prop H won’t cause more congestion; more building will cause more congestion. More parking may relive congestion. You are probably correct that most San Franciscans use both cars and transit. I do. I suspect most people who buy condos downtown will want a place to park their car and they should have that option. Most of them will leave their cars parked most of the time and use transit. Personally, I use my car to get out of town when there is less traffic or in the evening when there is less traffic and more parking. I don’t yet feel safe taking MUNI at night.
There is no evidence that Prop H will be bad for the economy or bad for MUNI.
